How to choose the right windows for your home

Choosing windows is one of the most important investments you will make when renovating or building a new home. It’s a decision you’ll live with for the next 20 to 30 years. Quality windows do more than just improve the aesthetics of your building; they directly affect your monthly energy bills, your home’s security, and the peace and quiet you enjoy inside. In today’s world of rising energy costs and increasing urban noise, the right choice is critical for long-term satisfaction.

What to look out for during the selection process?

1. The Profile System: The Backbone of Your Window

The profile is what gives the window its strength, shape, and primary insulation. Not all plastic windows are the same. We recommend sticking to proven German systems like REHAU or VEKA. These manufacturers have decades of experience and use high-quality uPVC that contains specialized UV stabilizers to prevent yellowing or brittleness over time.

When selecting a profile, consider the number of internal chambers and the installation depth. Generally, the more chambers a profile has, the lower its thermal conductivity. The modern standard for an energy-efficient home is a profile with at least 5 or 6 chambers and a depth of 70mm to 80mm or more. Wider profiles allow for thicker, more efficient glass units to be fitted.

2. The Glazing: 80% of the Performance

It’s easy to focus on the frames, but about 80% of a window’s surface area is glass. This is where most of your heat is lost or gained. Choosing triple glazing with low-emissivity (Low-E) glass is the current gold standard.

Also, consider “Four Seasons” or Solar Control glass if your windows face the direct summer sun. This type of glass is designed to reflect solar infrared rays outward during the summer while keeping internal furnace heat inside during the winter. Don’t forget to ask about “Warm Edge” spacers—made from composite materials rather than aluminum—which eliminate thermal bridges at the edge of the glass and prevent condensation from forming.

3. Sound Insulation: Your Personal Oasis

If you live near a busy road or in a noisy neighborhood, standard glazing might not be enough. The key to good sound insulation is using glass panes of different thicknesses (e.g., 4mm, 5mm, and 6mm) within the same unit. Different thicknesses “break” sound waves at different frequencies. For even better results, consider specialized acoustic laminated glass (Acoustic Triplex), which can reduce noise by more than 40 decibels, turning your home into a truly quiet retreat.

4. Hardware and Security

Don’t overlook the “hidden” parts. The hardware includes the handles, hinges, and the multi-point locking mechanisms that run all the way around the window sash. High-quality German hardware (such as Roto or Siegenia) ensures that the window closes tightly at every point, providing a perfect seal against drafts.

It also provides essential security levels. While standard hardware usually includes at least one or two security “mushrooms,” for ground floor apartments or houses, we strongly recommend reinforced anti-burglar hardware (Class RC2), which makes it extremely difficult for intruders to pry the window open with tools.

5. Installation Quality: The Final Step

Even the most expensive, high-spec window will fail to perform if it is not installed with precision. Poor installation leads to air leaks, distorted frames, and eventually—moisture and mold issues.

Professional installation requires exact leveling, proper anchoring with heavy-duty fasteners, and high-quality foam and sealant. For maximum efficiency, we recommend “3-Layer Installation” (RAL Installation), where the joint is protected internally by a vapor barrier tape and externally by a vapor-permeable tape. This prevents humidity from entering the wall structure and keeps the area around your windows dry and mold-free.
